At just 22 days old, Isabella underwent her first surgery to repair the heart defect that she was born with.
Her tiny body was stressed and she spent the next five months in the hospital working to recover. It was a relief when her mother, Melanie, and father, Jeff, could finally take their precious bundle home with them.
But, just months later she was back for the second surgery. From that point, she experienced immense medical challenges, including vocal paralysis after having her trachea reconstructed. “The tubes were too large for her throat, and the reconstruction was required,” Melanie exclaims. “There were just so many ups and downs and for being such a young girl, she definitely is fierce.” Fierce is the best word to describe Isabella. She proudly sports the large scar down her throat and chest as her warrior badge of honor.
“Make-A-Wish came at the perfect time,” Melanie says. Isabella wished to meet Minnie Mouse at Walt Disney World Resort. The reasoning behind this wish? “She is young, and she loves Minnie, but truly she wanted to escape everything at home and not think about doctors or appointments. She wanted to be treated like royalty, and we all were overwhelmed with the joy we found on our wish trip. It brought us together as a family, and it was more happiness than we ever had experienced.”
Isabella has more surgeries ahead, but things are much brighter now than they were previously. She continues to fight with all her tiny might.
