When Nicole first thought about Make-A-Wish®, she wasn’t sure what to expect. Her 5-year-old son, Shawn, was diagnosed with brain cancer and she said she didn’t like thinking it might be his last wish.
Once she started the process, however, she felt an incredible amount of comfort. She knew how good it would be for Shawn who only had two requirements for his wish: a beach and a fun water slide. After doing some research, they decided a Disney Cruise Line® vacation would be the perfect choice.
Shawn, his mom, stepdad, and six brothers and sisters went for a celebration of life. There was Mickey, movies, plays, beaches, and that amazing water slide. The little boy, who loves school, fishing, and basketball, had the time of his life. His mom was thrilled. “It was amazing,” she says. “There was a smile on his face the whole time.”
Nicole is fighting to bring awareness to childhood cancer while Shawn is fighting it like a warrior. For that week, though, while on their cruise, no one spoke about the lack of funding for pediatric cancer or about doctors, nurses, or cancer treatments. It was a week to focus on fun and family. Together, Shawn and his family were able to experience the happiest of times. Together, they felt comfortable and normal. Together, they made memories to last a lifetime.
